Special Goodbyes

Today we had a special day. Another small and warm child has left our Centre. And for so many years of the existence of the Center, this moment could become a technical process: acts of transfer, hugs and coming back to work.

But no!

We love each kid more than other. And everyone wants to make this moment a sort of special. A kind of starting point to a new, different, unknown, but such a long-awaited life.

I remember the times when there were no special farewells. No one then explained to the children where their friend had gone, no one planned this important day. Anxiety and fear penetrated the children’s heads, someday they would be taken away in an unknown direction.

This made it difficult to build close relationships with children and build some trusting atmosphere.

Today, this moment is already overgrown with traditions and rituals. Every time we try to create a small holiday. Gathering for an afternoon snack, during which new parents treat children with goodies; employees recall the path of change and suffering they have travelled through with the kids, pointing out the importance of each ward, and look at photographs during the adventures at the Centre. And the children extend the most sincere wishes, encode something secret to their friend in their messages.

Everyone is crying and rejoicing at each other. And no one can take away this experience. Because it is about true intimacy and a unique moment, the taste of which remains for a long time in the hearts of all those who have joined this difficult task – rehabilitation.
